St. Louis Park High School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Choral/Vocal Music Teacher. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses within the music department, specifically focusing on the following subjects:
  • Concert Choir
  • Park Singers
  • Hip Hop History
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Music Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and comprehensive music instruction that fosters students' appreciation, understanding, and skills in music. They create a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports musical growth, creativity, and performance opportunities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and implements a music curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
  • Teaches music theory, history, vocal and instrumental techniques, and appreciation.
  • Adapts lessons to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Integrates technology and multimedia resources into instruction when appropriate.
  • Leads and directs school concerts, recitals, and performances.
  • Encourages student participation in choir, band, orchestra, or other ensembles.
  • Provides individual and group instruction to improve musical skills.
  • Supports students in developing confidence, creativity, and teamwork through music.
  • Maintains musical instruments, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Establishes and enforces classroom rules to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Manages rehearsal schedules, performance logistics, and student expectations.
  • Works with colleagues to integrate music into interdisciplinary learning.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about student progress and upcoming events.
  • Coordinates with school staff and administration for performances and special programs.
  • Participates in professional learning opportunities and stays current with best practices in music education.
  • Ensures compliance with school policies, safety regulations, and copyright laws.
  • Attends staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Movement: Regularly required to stand, walk, and move around the classroom, music room, or performance spaces.
  • Lifting & Carrying: May be required to lift and carry musical instruments, equipment, or classroom materials (typically up to 25 lbs).
  • Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to play musical instruments, conduct, use musical technology, and handle classroom materials effectively.
  • Extended Standing: Frequently stands for extended periods during lessons, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Hearing & Communication: Requires clear hearing to listen to and evaluate students' performances, and strong verbal communication to provide instructions and feedback.
  • Fine & Gross Motor Skills: Uses fine motor skills for tasks such as writing, handling instruments, and typing for lesson planning or reports.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Setting: Primarily works in a music classroom or performance space such as an auditorium or band/orchestra room.
  • Schedule: Typically follows the school-year schedule with standard school hours, but may include evening or weekend performances, concerts, and rehearsals.
  • Interaction: Works closely with students, staff, administrators, and parents to promote musical learning and performance.
  • Noise & Distractions: Exposure to noise from student rehearsals, performances, and musical instruments. Requires the ability to manage noise levels effectively.
  • Collaboration: Frequently collaborates with other teachers, especially for interdisciplinary projects or school-wide events.
  • Physical Environment: May need to move between various locations within the school for different classes and events, including classrooms, hallways, and performance venues.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A Master's degree in Music Education or a specialized area may be preferred for some positions.
    State certification or licensure in Music Education is required to teach in public schools.
  • Additional certifications in specialized areas (e.g., choral music, instrumental music) may be beneficial.
  • Prior teaching experience in music, especially in a school or classroom setting, is often preferred.
  • Experience directing school musical groups, such as choirs, bands, or orchestras, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and integrating music across different grade levels is an asset.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Minnesota teaching license in Vocal Music.
