Position Summary:

This position will serve as a Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator within the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases which conducts investigator initiated, industry, and NIH funded clinical trials of HIV prevention and treatment, sexually transmitted infections, and other infectious diseases at UNC-Chapel Hill and at sites throughout the world. The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator is responsible for independently providing specialized nursing services for various clinical research protocols. They are responsible for providing guidance and assistance to study teams in both clinical and non-clinical areas of research, including participant visits, data quality, and others.

This position has broad responsibility for the implementation of complex clinical trials including prevention, treatment and possible cure of HIV, and other infectious and/or sexually transmitted diseases. The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator will ensure that all protocol goals are met by sponsor deadlines including participant recruitment, conduct of study procedures, participant safety, data collection and general administration. The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator demonstrates well developed knowledge of adult assessment and common health problems, HIV and common comorbidities and other infectious diseases, medical ethics, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as well as network and study-specific procedures and data collection. This position is a professional member of the staff and as such is expected to work independently, adhere to all university, professional and license-specific regulations as well as participate in unit-wide activities and exhibit a high degree of accountability for all work. The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator focuses on the care of research participants enrolled in complex phase 1,2 and 3 clinical trials which may include inpatient and outpatient settings. This position may be called upon to participate in the hiring, training and supervision of new staff. All team members are expected to participate in the Clinical Quality Assurance program.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in the area of specialization.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

This position requires work-related travel and the candidate must possess a valid drivers license.

Must be able to use considerable judgement and skills in performing work assignments. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work and communicate with diverse populations effectively and professionally. Ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team. Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.

This position requires a great deal of autonomy coupled with the ability to seek input and oversight when appropriate.

Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with volunteers, patients, families, staff, physicians, and sponsor representatives from diverse backgrounds.

Must be willing and able to adjust to varying work/time demands. Candidates must have excellent data documentation skills. Candidates must have the ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities in a high-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining participant safety and data quality. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
  • Research experience is preferable for therapeutic/interventional clinical trials and strongly preferred if the candidate has experience in the infectious disease field or experience with the participant population.
  • Strong clinical skills including phlebotomy, IV access and medication administration.
  • Knowledge of GCP, HSP and ICH Guidelines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, capacity to perform and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Bilingual in Spanish both verbal and written communication.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

Ability to move between research office and clinic (approximately .25 miles).
