The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Seasonal Masonry Worker II ( Masonry Mechanic 2G ) ( Grade G12) within the OHM Seasonal 1000 Hours Division .
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A TEMPORARY 1000HR POSITION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & TRANSPORTATION
About the Position

This is full performance manual concrete finishing/brick work. Incumbents perform manual cement/brick finishing work accomplished with the construction and repair of bridges, retaining walls, residential sidewalks and curbs, drainage structures and headwall. Tasks are in connection with storm drain maintenance and road construction. Duties require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with departmental policies, rules and regulations. Hours will vary depending on the needs of the department and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to work over-time, if needed.
About the Agency
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy areaall of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Examples of Work
  • Performs routine and less complex cement/brick finishing duties associated with the trade
  • Removes old concrete, sets forms, mixes, places and finishes new concrete of storm drain inlets or basins
  • Places steel dividers and other expansion joints in sidewalks
  • Lays drainpipes in cement
  • Smooths and levels cement surfaces of poured concrete using hand or power tools, floats, trowels, screeds, and other tools
  • Applies a finishing coat of cement to surfaces of streets, sidewalks, bridge work and other concrete work
  • Measures dimensions to calculate quantities of materials needed
  • Removes rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer
  • Draws from stock and procures materials, tools, equipment and supplies for each cement maintenance projects
  • Investigates service requests/complaints to assess the needs of the job and materials required
  • Initiates corrective action to ensure that problems are rectified
  • Designs and constructs various forms prior to pouring cement using precise measurements and modern equipment and techniques
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work

Qualifications


  • Completion of high school (or vocational high school)
  • Responsible experience in the cement/brick finishing trade
An equivalent combination of experience, training or education which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities may also be considered.

General Plan Information:
The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren).
