Position Overview

The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petcos vision of Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World. to develop a high-performing team that delivers top-line sales growth while maintaining welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The GM drives the business through a focus on people (talent acquisition, training, and development), performance (guest service, sales, and expense control), and process (standard operating procedures and policies), resulting in overall profitability. This position requires a passion for pets, ability to inspire and lead a team, a focus on process excellence, and a drive for results.

People

  • Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
  • Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners in all areas required to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including effective rollout selling models.
  • Create a professional environment that inspires and encourages growth and engagement of partners.
  • Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration; provide clear direction.
  • Provide quick and courteous service to all Petco guests by helping partners determine guest needs and sharing product knowledge to meet customer needs.
  • Responsible for partner performance management in the Pet Care Center.
  • Demonstrate a continuous improvement and growth mindset.

Performance

  • Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
  • Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales goals; manage workload.
  • Review and interpret financial and operational reporting regularly.
  • Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve and grow the business using Petco programs and resources.
  • Market the Pet Care Center and its products; plan on-site and community events such as adoptions, school visits, local promotions and animal-welfare events.

Process

  • Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.
  • Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed, and stocked; make merchandising decisions aligned with visual standards and monthly ad planner guidelines.
  • Complete and submit accounting, inventory management and payroll paperwork timely; keep expenses within budgeted levels.
  • Maintain the Pet Care Centers appearance and safety procedures; protect pets and merchandise and minimize loss.
  • Open/close the Pet Care Center according to policies and procedures with emphasis on safety and security.
  • Maintain professional image, appearance, and cleanliness.

  • Foster a collaborative culture; encourage ideas to increase efficiency and improve guest engagement and satisfaction.

  • Engage and be present; lead with high standards in a positive working environment.

Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or GED; strong business & finance acumen, analysis and problem-solving, and a focus on people development & guest service.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Three or more years of management experience; prior retail management preferred.
  • General business knowledge and strong organizational skills.
  • Customer service aptitude and ability to instruct others; professional appearance and genuine interest in animals.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Internal candidates may be required to complete PETCO Management Achievement Program modules.

Supervisory Responsibility

The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners including services.

Work Environment

The majority of duties are indoors; occasional stocking, carry-outs, and bank deposits may require time outside. The role involves bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. A limited amount of travel may be required.

Contacts

This position has continuous contact with the public at the Pet Care Center and related events, and regular contact with other departments, distribution centers, and support centers. External contact may be required for coordination of various Pet Care Center activities.
